AGRA: Seven members of a family were sentenced to life imprisonment after they were found guilty of burning alive their daughter-in-law 13 years ago in Makdoom Nagar under Mahanagar police station of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district.
The court of additional district judge (6) Naval Kishore Singh also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the convicts, additional district government counsel (ADGC) JP Rajput said.
“According to plaintiff Sude Bhura’s complaimt, his daughter. Kausar Jahan, 30, was living in her maternal house after a dispute with her husband. On April 4, 2011, when his daughter was collecting water from a tap outside their house, she was surrounded by her husband and other members of his family,” Rajpur said.
“She ran inside the house but they followed her, dragged her outside, poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. She suffered severe burns and was rushed to hospital, where she died after seven days. Police recorded her statement in the hospital before her death,” added Rajput.
A case under multiple IPC sections – including 302 (murder), 498A (whoever, being the husband or relative of the husband of a woman, subjects a woman to cruelty) – was registered against Kausar’s husband, Mohd Kasif (50), brothers-in-law Mohd Hasim (43), Mohd Akhtar (40) and Mohd Afsar (45), mother-in-law Zadi Begum (90), sister-in-law Siroj (42) and her husband Mushir (49). They were residents of same area.
During the trial, the prosecution team presented eight witnesses. The woman’s dying declaration was also taken into account while sentencing the convicts, ADGC Rajput added.
